Oil poised for a rebound as OPEC+ pre-meetings consolidate case for continued tightness

11 June 2019

Ahead of the June 25/26th OPEC+ meetings, Saudi Arabia and Russia have discussed the case for extending current supply curbs. An agreement between these oil super-powers usually sets the tone for the wider group. Oil’s lacklustre performance in recent weeks could be reversed if indeed the oil cartel can maintain the current supply-deficit.

US & European stock markets rise on hopes of Fed rate cut

10 June 2019

The first week of June got off to a strong start as stocks were bolstered by expectations that the Fed would cut short term interest rates this year. The S&P 500’s performance marked the best week of the year and the index is currently 3% short of its all-time high. Meanwhile, European stock markets such as Germany’s DAX and Italy’s FTSE MIB gained almost 3%; while the STOXX Europe 600 Index and UK’S FTSE 100 rose more than 2%.

Tanking oil prices belie geopolitical risks

04 June 2019

Brent oil fell more than 12% last week, reacting to trade-protection related fears. The market appears to have ignored the fact that oil supply is still very tight and risks tightening further. The Saudi Arabian-led emergency security meeting over the weekend should be raising the geopolitical premium in oil, yet with the headlines being supressed to back-pages, the precarious situation in the Middle East appears to be flying under the radar. Oil could stage a substantial rebound in the near future.

Brexit Uncertainty continues as October 31st deadline approaches

15 Oct 2019

The EU and the UK are engaged in intensive negotiations following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposed Brexit deal. The EU insists that any deal must avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, protect the economy of the island and the Good Friday Agreement and safeguard the integrity of the single market. The current deadline for Brexit is 31 October but if a deal is not reached and ratified by 19 October then the UK parliament has required PM Johnson to request another extension which could lead to a general election and/or another referendum. This uncertainty has been driving the volatility in Pound Sterling.

Cautious optimism on the US-China trade front

15 Oct 2019

Encouraging news emerged last week as President Trump announced a ‘Phase 1’ trade deal between US and China in which the US would suspend planned tariff increases on October 15 in return for increased agricultural purchases from China, along with agreements on protection of intellectual property, access for financial services firms and currency pledges. This was moderately supportive of risk assets including equities and industrial metals. Gold, as a historically safe haven asset, remains in favour and is hovering around USD1500/oz as trade related risks are still far from resolved.

US Fed maintains its dovish tone

15 Oct 2019

Comments by US Federal Reserve (Fed) Chairman Powell were notably dovish describing the current period as a mid-cycle slowdown but noting that the Fed is data dependent with “a healthy dose of risk management”. Powell confirmed that the Fed will soon resume allowing natural growth in its balance sheet by buying short term Treasury Bills to help avoid problems in the short-term money (repo) market as seen lately.

Important information

Short & Leveraged Exchange-Traded Products are only intended for investors who understand the risks involved in investing in a product with short and/or leveraged exposure and who intend to invest on a short-term basis. Any investment in short and/or leveraged products should be monitored on a regular basis (as frequently as daily) to ensure consistency with your investment strategy. You should understand that investments in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products held for a period of longer than one day may not provide returns equivalent to the return from the relevant unleveraged investment multiplied by the relevant leverage factor. Potential losses in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products may be magnified in comparison to investments that do not incorporate these strategies. Please refer to the section entitled “Risk Factors” in the relevant prospectus for further details of these and other risks associated with an investment in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products. You should consult an independent investment adviser prior to making an investment in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products in order to determine suitability to your circumstances.
