European stocks broadly flat last week24 Feb 2020
European shares ended the week flat as a bounce in business activity helped ease concerns around the impact of coronavirus on regional economic growth. IHS Markit Eurozone Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) climbed to 51.6 in February from 51.3 in January largely due to an increase in the services component. The manufacturing PMI was below the breakeven level but continued to rise, reaching 49.1 from 47.9 in January, the best reading in a year, well ahead of expectations.
Gold hits new highs as coronavirus fears grip markets24 Feb 2020
With more new cases of coronavirus being reported outside China, investors have turned to defensive safe havens driving the surge in gold prices. As of Monday 24 February, gold was trading at US$1678/oz up more than 6% from only a week ago as speculative positioning on gold futures exchanges, an important indicator of market sentiment, reached all-time highs.
Oil’s rollercoaster ride continues24 Feb 2020
Oil prices had a very negative month in January when coronavirus concerns first took their toll on markets. The modest recovery in oil prices around the middle of February happened as markets began to expect the Oil Producing and Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its partners to swiftly respond with additional supply cuts. Supply disruption from Libya, where several production bases were shut due to domestic political reasons, further supported the recovery. Over the last week, oil prices have weakened again as coronavirus fears have spread further and OPEC has not hastened any additional cuts at least until it meets in the first week of March.

Short & Leveraged Exchange-Traded Products are only intended for investors who understand the risks involved in investing in a product with short and/or leveraged exposure and who intend to invest on a short-term basis. Any investment in short and/or leveraged products should be monitored on a regular basis (as frequently as daily) to ensure consistency with your investment strategy. You should understand that investments in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products held for a period of longer than one day may not provide returns equivalent to the return from the relevant unleveraged investment multiplied by the relevant leverage factor. Potential losses in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products may be magnified in comparison to investments that do not incorporate these strategies. Please refer to the section entitled “Risk Factors” in the relevant prospectus for further details of these and other risks associated with an investment in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products. You should consult an independent investment adviser prior to making an investment in short and/or leveraged exchange-traded products in order to determine suitability to your circumstances.
